Award-winning trumpeter Roy Hargrove has passed away at the age of 49.

Hargrove first stepped on the scene in the late 1980’s. His debut album, Diamond in the Rough was released in 1990. Hargrove would go on to tour with the Jazz Futures. A respected and sought after musician, Hargrove’s distinct sound can be heard on several neo-soul albums including D’Angelo’s Voodoo, and Erykah Badu’s Mama’s Gun.

Hargrove won two Grammy Awards throughout his career and mentored several artists including Ambrose Akinmusire. Roy Hargrove is survived by his wife Aida, daughter Kamala, mother Jackyln, and younger brother Brian. Roy Hargrove’s legacy will live on through the gift of his music.
