The death of George Floyd, a 46-year-old unarmed Black man by police officers has sparked outrage globally. Floyd was killed on May 25. He was arrested for allegedly using a counterfeit $20 bill. Floyd was pinned to the ground with Derek Chauvin, the officer who can be seen most clearly in witness videos pinning Mr. Floyd to the ground. Chauvin was arrested and charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.  Three other former officers, Thomas Lane, J. Alexander Kueng and Tou Thao remain under investigation.

Protesters in California

Floyd’s death was just one of many that have garnered media attention in the recent weeks. The deaths of Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, and Ahmaud Arbery have fueled frustration and outrage. Protests have been taking place nationally, starting first in Minneapolis where Floyd was killed, and spread to major cities including Atlanta, Chicago, Baltimore, Tampa, and Washington D.C. Many cities have imposed curfews to deter protesters but they remain vigilant. Several protests have been become violent, with eye witnesses saying police officers use excessive force and other means to disperse crowds. On Monday, President Trump turned security forces on peaceful protesters in front of the White House, shortly before declaring himself the “President of Law & Order.” A curfew of 7 p.m. was enforced in the District.

As the protests continue, many call for the arrests of the three other officers who were seen in the video during Floyd’s death. We will continue to follow this story.
