Cyntonia Brown is set to be released from prison this month. Brown was sentenced to life in prison in 2004 at the age of 16, after being convicted of murder. A victim of sex trafficking, Brown’s story garnered the attention of lawmakers and celebrities alike, all fighting for justice reform for Brown and others like her.

Earlier this year, then Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam took the rare step of commuting her sentence, paving the way for her Aug. 7 release. Brown, now 31, served 15 years in prison. During her incarceration, she has taken college courses. After her release, she will follow several terms of her probation, including serve community service.
