
Mandrell Birks
Mandrell Birks is the passionate and motivated co-host and creator of the first world wide domestic violence radio program “The Sighlent Storm” on WHUR-WORLD, airing Saturdays at 9:00 am. Committed to breaking the cycle of abuse, Mandrell has been a pioneer in helping families since 1999. He has spearheaded walks, forums, and conferences raising awareness about and protesting domestic violence. For his work as an activist, he received the Governor’s Victim Assistance Award in 2006 from the Maryland Office of Crime Control and Prevention. Mandrell holds a B.S. in Child and Family Development, and a Masters degree in Education.
John Blake
Ruthven John Blake hails from the Caribbean nation of Trinidad and Tobago. John’s love for radio illuminates the World programming through The Caribbean Experience. John continues to attract Caribbean and non-Caribbean listeners while bridging cultures and generations through music, news, interviews and special features. In addition to hosting The Caribbean Experience, John held several full-time positions at WHUR-FM including public service director, senior technical producer/instructor and production director. He has taught radio production at Howard University’s radio department and has provided technical assistance to interns majoring in broadcast journalism.
Joe Gorham
Joe Gorham is a veteran broadcaster who is the Music Director
for WHUR-WORLD and the host of WORLD’s “Legato Lycx.”
Joe—with an ear for the music and for the sounds that thrill
audiences-- began his radio career as a freelance technical producer
for WHUR’s “Jerry Phillips Morning Show” and
eventually became an announcer/staff performer with first WHUR
and later other urban market stations in Washington, DC and Atlanta.
He has also hosted the weekend edition of “The Original
Quiet Storm,” produced the Tom Joyner Morning Show, and
hosted both “The Adult-Mix Concert Series” and “Spoken
Word @ Joe’s Place” (a one hour show featuring local
and nationally acclaimed poets).
Denise C. McCain
Denise C. McCain is a leading domestic violence advocate and management consultant who brings more than 15 years of broad base and diverse experience to WHUR-WORLD. Denise has been an integral player in statewide efforts to effectuate systemic change as a grassroots advocate, government liaison, and researcher in the field of domestic violence. As the former Executive Director of the Prince George ’s County Family Crisis Center, she was instrumental in the establishment of the “Give Me Shelter Radiothon” done in conjunction with WHUR-FM to raise money for the expansion of the Safe Passage Emergency Shelter. Denise holds a B.A. in criminology, a Masters degree in Public Administrations, and is currently a Doctoral candidate for a doctorate in public administration from the Schaefer School of Public Policy at the University of Baltimore. Lorna Newton
Lorna Newton is the sensitive, dynamic host of “The Connection” on
WHUR-WORLD. Lorna brings to WORLD her more than 20 years in radio
including many years as a Afternoon Drive on WHUR-FM’s “Live
with Doug & Lorna” and you can still hear her there on Sunday afternoons from 2-7pm with “DC
Inspirations.” She has a world perspective—having toured and or performed in all 50 states and over 25 countries. She proudly served 8 years on active duty in the United States Air Force
where she became only the second woman in Air Force history to
win the coveted first place Roger in the Air Force/s World Wide Talent Contest as a“Master of
Ceremonies." Lorna was selected twice to tour with Air Force Entertainment's, “TOPS IN BLUE”. Lorna still works with the program today looking for talent and helping to groom them for their tour around the world. To Lorna, music is life.
Taylor Thomas
Taylor Thomas is a 15 year News Veteran and the host of "Let's talk Money" which airs every Friday at 11:30am. Before the current economic crisis, Taylor realized the need for people to be more involved with their finances and more specifically on how they think about and use money. Taylor hopes to inspire others not just to save money but to learn how to create generational wealth and most importantly pass their knowledge onto others.
