Earth Day is an annual holiday, celebrated on April 22, on which events are held worldwide to demonstrate support for environmental protection. In 2013 the day is 43 years old. It is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network, and is celebrated in more than 192 countries every year. The first Earth Day, observed across the country on April 22, 1970, crystallized a growing public concern about ecological crises. Earth Day was the product of local grassroots action to increase environmental awareness but it also focused the nation’s political agenda on urgent environmental issues. Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson, who in September 1969 proposed a national teach-in on the environment to send a message to Washington that public opinion was solidly behind a bold political agenda on environmental problems. Inspired by the campus activism of the late 1960s, he employed a team of experienced students to help him respond to the immediate and overwhelming public excitement for a national day on the environment. However, Nelson insisted the first Earth Day’s activities be created not by organizers in Washington, but by individuals and groups in their own communities. As a result of this empowering vision, 1 in 10 Americans participated in the first Earth Day, drawing extensive attention from the media and jump-starting an era of bold environmental legislation. We here at WHUR-World, and the Howard University Radio Network, would like to wish everyone a Happy Earth day!

It is celebrated during March in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia, corresponding with International Women’s Day on March 8. Significant factors contributed to the emergence of women’s history. One of them was the women’s movement of the sixties that caused women to question their invisibility in traditional American history texts. The movement also raised the aspirations as well as the opportunities of women, and produced a growing number of female historians. Women’s history was also part of a larger movement that transformed the study of history in the United States. By the 1970s, “the new social history” began replacing the older style. Emphasis shifted to a broader spectrum of American life, including such topics as the history of urban life, public health, ethnicity, the media, and poverty. The public celebration of women’s history in this country began in 1978 as “Women’s History Week” in Sonoma County, California. The week including March 8, International Women’s Day, was selected. In 1981, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Rep. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.) co-sponsored a joint Congressional resolution proclaiming a national Women’s History Week. In 1987, Congress expanded the celebration to a month, and March was declared Women’s History Month. The popularity of women’s history celebrations continues to spread as more people are becoming aware of the contributions of women and girls. Before the month ends, be sure to celebrate Women’s Appreciation Month by attending an event at the Smithsonian, National Building Museum, Twins Jazz Club, and many more locations. We here at WHUR-WORLD, would like to wish you a pleasant Women’s Appreciation Month!

He passed away on March 16th, 2013 at the age of 76 years old in Orlando, Florida. The band recorded for Detroit label Motown later in the 1960s, but was best known for its work with producer, arranger and songwriter Thom Bell, helping define the lush sound of Philly soul in the 1970s.

The Moorland-Spingarn Research Center, Howard University’s premier library documenting the global black experience is pleased to present “Barack Obama: The First Term, 2009-2012″, an exhibition of some 60 photographs documenting Barack Obama’s first four years as President of the United States. Founded 99 years ago as a small collection of books, manuscripts and other documents, the Moorland-Spingarn has developed into the premier academic research library in the field of African American and African Diasporan history and culture. The photographs in the exhibition have been selected from the extensive photographic archive of President Obama’s Official White House Photographer, Pete Souza. Souza and his staff have been shooting upwards of 10,000 photos a week documenting Barack Obama’s daily activities. The works selected for this exhibition survey the major achievement moments of President Obama’s first term while revealing the day-to-day workings of the office of the President. They also explore the human dimensions of Obama’s life as President for himself and for his family. The collective portrait that emerges from these images is that of a concerned and committed public servant striving to right the American ship of state in a period of profound national crisis. This special event will take place March 21st, 2013 from 9am-4pm at 500 Howard Place Northwest. We here at WHUR-World encourage you to take the time to go to this event for an educational and mesmerizing experience.

WHUR 96.3 FM and Howard University will host a 12-hour radiothon from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, March 6th, to help send hundreds of Howard University students to cities across the United States and possibly Haiti to provide critical services to those in need. The “Helping Hands” radiothon asks listeners to phone in, drop by the radio station or to go online to make a contribution so students can travel to Chicago, Detroit, New Orleans, Atlanta and here in the Washington area to help families struggling with a variety of issues. This year, students will return to help displaced families in New Orleans, victims of gun violence in Chicago, illiteracy in Detroit and education in Atlanta and Washington D.C. In its 19th year, Howard University’s ASB program is coordinated through the Office of the Dean of the Chapel. The program expanded dramatically in 2006 as more than 400 Howard students volunteered to go to New Orleans to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. Volunteers include undergraduates, Howard University School of Law students, other graduate students and faculty and staff. All donations to this year’s ASB will help to further the University’s legacy of leadership and service to our nation. For more information, please contact Renee Nash at rnash@howard.edu or 202-806-3623. We here at WHUR-World and the Howard University Radio Network would appreciate your effort and participation. Thank you.

Three-time Grammy winner, Harris joined The Temptations in 1971 at the age of 21 following the departure of original band member Eddie Kendricks. Harris was born Otis Robert Harris on July 17, 1950 in Baltimore, Maryland. Growing up, Harris quickly developed a liking towards music and begun singing in a group as a teenager. Harris was a major Temptations fan, and idolized in particular the group’s falsetto, Eddie Kendricks so he began to pattern himself after Kendricks. In April 1971, he stumbled upon an opportunity to join The Temptations after a friend convinced him to audition. Soon he was performing with the Temptations for four years, providing Kendricks-esque lead vocals on hits such as “Superstar (Remember How You Got Where You Are)” (1971), “Take a Look Around” (1972), the #1 pop hit “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone”, (1972, a three-time Grammy Award winner), the #1 R&B hit “Masterpiece” (1973), “Plastic Man” (also 1973), He leads on “Love Woke Me Up This Morning” from the All Directions album (1972) and is featured prominently on the hard-to-find The Temptations Live in Japan (1975). Harris was fired from the group abruptly in 1975 after he made inappropriate statements that affected the group’s public image, according to original member Otis Williams. Shortly after his firing, Harris rejoined his former band The Young Vandals, renaming themselves Impact, and recorded a number of minor soul and disco hits. At the age of 47, Harris was diagnosed with prostate cancer, while making a comeback into the music industry. After being treated for the disease, Harris founded The Damon Harris Cancer Foundation in 2001. The organization is a non-profit company, designed to heighten awareness of prostate cancer diagnoses and treatments. Harris was hospitalized in a Baltimore hospice until his death on February 18th, 2013 at the age of 62 years old. We here at WHUR-WORLD would like to extend our condolences to the Harris family and friends as we remember…..Damon Harris!
